Malta Summer Field School 2010
From July 6 to July 26

We offer you a unique opportunity to acquire some 'in the field' experience. The islands of Malta present a kaleidoscope of past and present: a fascinating legacy of European culture and rural Mediterranean traditions, represented in the living history of its fishing villages. Situated in the heart of the Mediterranean, Malta possesses a typical island culture. Yet, this has not led to isolation, on the contrary. As a consequence of its location at the crossroads of maritime routes between Europe, Africa and Asia, Malta has always been strategically important. Many different cultures have set foot on the islands, leaving their imprints, which are still visible today. These foreign influences are for instance present in the Maltese language; an interesting fusion of Arabic and other romance languages. At the same time, Malta has a perfectly English-speaking population. This enhances accessibility for foreign researchers and acts a perfect entry point for anthropologists. Plenty of possibilities for interesting field research are available: from architectural and religious sites to tourism and ethnic relations.

The research participants are doing will be published.
