Malta Summer Field School 2010
Anthropology of Food

This class is presented as an optional course that will fully integrate with the normal program of the summer school. It includes a variety of excursions and hands-on classes. These classes will bring you in close contact with a variety of key-persons in Gozitan society, which can be usefull for other research as well. The classes itself will have a lot to do with traditional food customs, such as food preservation techniques, traditional dishes and cooking habits. But these experiences will be extrapolated to more fundamental anthropological issues during the summer school. (What is tradition and how does it create identity or even ethnicity? How is tradition passed through? How is tradition influenced by intercultural encounters? Does tradition obstruct interculturalism?)
