SUMMER SCHOOL 2008 PARTICIPANTS

Jessica Gergeley Jessica Gergely
I am a photojournalist looking to further my career with a degree in Anthropology. Currently I am in my first year of studies at the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, Canada. My journalism experience has given me the opportunity to meet many people and do many things, and with an education in anthropology I hope to take my knowledge to a further degree. Photography is my passion and I hope it is something I can bring into the field. I also enjoy mountain biking, hiking and a good glass of red wine!

Jessica Hopper Jessica Hopper
I am a second year graduate student at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee working toward a MS in Cultural Anthropology and Museum Studies. My area of interest is primarily in mortuary and death care practices, particularly regarding issues of performance, identity, ritual, art and economics. When I’m not buried in school work, I love to read and I am one of those annoying people who is always quoting some TV show or movie. I love Milwaukee but I long to travel and look forward to the unique field experience this program will provide.

Brian Rosenblatt Brian Rosenblatt
Being an undergraduate anthropology student, I have yearned for true outside field experience, so seldom available for junior anthropology students. The prospect of learning from experienced researchers, and then preparing my own field work is especially exciting. I am undertaking this endeavior now, as I prepare for my upcoming research trip to Fiji later this year.

Greta Kliewer Greta Kliewer
My name is Greta Kliewer. I am currently a sophomore at Kansas State University, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in anthropology and a minor in Japanese. I am fascinated with various branches of anthropology including cultural, linguistic, nutritional and proxemics studies. I am also interested in studying Japanese culture and the Ainu language. I am a member of the KSU Japanese Yosakoi Dance Club and was privileged to participate in a prestigious Yosakoi dance festival in Japan last summer. I look forward to using this field school as an opportunity to explore various branches of anthropology and learn how to conduct !eldwork in various settings.

Rhys Bainham Rhys Bainham
I am a First Year undergraduate student studying Social Anthropology at the London School of Economics and Political Science. I love to travel and explore new countries and cultures, of which the mediterranean is my specific area of interest. I am interested in carrying out future ethnographic research in this area of the world, therefore this experience would provide me with a wealth of invaluable first hand knowledge and experience. In my spare time I watch a lot of sport, football being my favourite.

Marjan Moris Marjan Moris

I obtained my Master’s Degree on Social and Cultural Anthropology at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium in 2007, together with a teacher’s degree. After a short period of teaching Dutch to adolescent newcomers to Belgian society, I started working as a community worker in one of the most multicultural neighborhoods of Antwerp. I chose this work setting because felt that I lacked practical experience in the field to really understand some of the migration theories I came across during my studies. I strongly believe that the methods used in anthropological research are valuable tools in the search for answers to migration-related questions many European societies face today. I consider this summerschool one of few possibilities to strengthen my fieldwork-skills and look forward to meeting other beginning as well as experienced anthropologists.

Angi Liu Bryce Peake
I will be graduating from Eastern Illinois University in May with a BMus and a minor in anthropology. I love to read, but strangely enough, only non-fiction. I am very interested in anthropological theory as it pertains to identity, globalization, and cultural expression. Just because I'm a theory head doesn't mean I don't like to have a good time too, in my spare time I enjoy listening to music and striking up conversation with anything that will talk back. I think that Malta will be the perfect exposure for me to apply all of the anthropological theory I've been reading for so long!

Sandalia Genus Laura Jarvis
I am currently a senior at Tulane University, and plan to graduate in May with a BA in Anthropology and French. I have always been an inquisitive person and an avid traveler, and this summer program will give me the rare chance to use both these traits. I am very excited about the opportunity to acquire real !eld experience, as well as discover the intricacies of such an interesting place as Malta.

Angi Liu Amy Kordeck
My name is Amy Kordeck, and I am a junior level Anthropology and Sociology major at Indiana University Northwest. I enjoy the study of cultural anthropology and look forward to studying abroad and conducting my own research! I'm passionate about photography and love to tell a story through the lens. A few years ago I was certified as a PADI open water diver with an underwater photography certification. I'm excited for the opportunity to study in such a beautiful location.

Trish Campbell Trish Campbell
I am considered at my home university as a non, traditional student because i am in my mid-forties. I am however completing my first upper division degree and have been looking for an opportunity to apply what i've learned in exchange for enhancing my education and training. I believe the program offers exactly what i am looking for in a study abroad program and feel most fortunate that i have the opportunity to apply.

Angi Liu Wim Peumans
I'm in my first year of a Master in Social and Cultural Anthropology at the Catholic University of Leuven. Before I studied Political Sciences. As far as anthropology is concerned, my interests are sexual minorities, migration, globalisation and all things urban. In my spare time, I enjoy literature, music, swimming, skiing, learning Spanish, cinema, nature, theatre and, of course, travelling. When I read about this summer school, I immediately applied: I think this is going to be a unique experience!

John Nuckols John Nuckols
I am an Anthropology major currently studying at the University of West Florida. My focus thus far has been mostly on the cultural aspects of Anthropology, although I do like to keep an expanded focus within my studies that I mightn’t close myself to whatever experiences may arise from a varied experience. I have a great love of European culture and have every hope of using a field school like this to expand the horizons of my linguistic and cultural understanding of the world around me.

Josh Shaughnessy Josh Shaughnessy
My name is Josh Shaughnessy. I am a senior anthropology major at Indiana University  of Pennsylvania. I am in love with the many areas of study and opportunities available to anthropologists these days. My area of interest in anthropology is cultural and visual anthropology. I am very interested in the way that photography can be combined with ethnography to try and create a full picture of a culture. The project in Malta is a great opportunity for me to hone my skills at research and become a better photographer.
