ORAL HISTORY AT SCHOOL

Oral History offers a fascinating world of the near past. It’s about shared history; often surprising and always innovating. It makes history vivid and –for many - comprehensible.

Expeditions shares its experience with schools by developing Oral History projects. We offer a complete setting to do an intensive Oral History project with any group of students.

Our Oral History team provides the whole process of the creation of an Oral History book together with the schoolteam. We provide training seminars for students and teachers, assist with the fundraising, we help organizing events related to the project... Of course we also take care of the editing and printing of the book.

We conceive the oral history at schools as very beneficial and cost effective in a very broad sense. First the project can be fully integrated in the normal educational program, and this on an interdisciplinairy basis. So there won't be much 'extra' work for people involved. Second, by striving for a maximum of cost efficiency former projects even turned out to be very profitable for schools. Third, it's merely impossible to grasp the immaterial gain of an oral history project. Not only for the school and its students, but also for the larger community it belongs to. And last but not least: the publication of a scientific book ensures the school of some serious exposure in its regional and local community.

Thanks to oral history we can compile an image of many interesting and extremely important aspects of life and thus get access to the individual microcosm of earlier times.

This project's results speak for themselves. Thus maybe this humble contribution of mine had better be perceived as the expression of a shared enthusiasm and of my great appreciation for the social commitment of the Oral History Team.
